I would love to grow my own fresh herbs and spices. Is it ok to grow them indoors or should I wait for the summer to start? Also any websites or books you can offer for suggestions would be most helpful. I live in an apartment with a balcony so growing one in a garden won’t do. Thanks

Herbs grow very nicely in the house. We have tons of them in a greenhouse year ’round. They will do quite well in your house as long as they get at least a little sun. The best book I know of on herbs is by Jekka McVicar. I can’t remember the title but she tells how to grow, harvest and cook with herbs. Another thing you might consider if you like chilis is to grow your favorite variety in the house. They make good house plants. Check it out.

I grew herbs on our balcony and in my bedroom window (it’s the only place that gets enough sun!)
I subscribe to a magazine called The Herb Companion. It’s a great source of information. The USDA has a web page with links about herb growing too.
Have fun!

I also have a balcony, what I did in the late winter months was start my herb garden by seed, it is alot of fun, I didn’t even use a light like they suggest, and I grew Basil, that grew like mental, Mint, Lavender, Tarragon, Sage, Chives, Chamomille, Oregano, and left it on the balcony all summer, when it started to get cold, I brought them in the house, my Basil, which is now a tree lives in my bedroom window, and the aroma is amazing, I started with those little peat disks that you put into a tiny starter pot, and add water, is swells up and you make a hole and put the seed in, some seeds need different starting conditions, mostly I got all my information from books, the library is filled with books on growing herbs in containers, also, a search on the web for growing herbs in containers will send you on your way. I plan on using some light this time around because I would like to dabble with it this winter, I think that might be the best way if summer isn’t around the corner, go for it, it is pretty amazing to watch your seed push it’s way out of the soil, and very rewarding when you start eating it!!! Have fun!
